I'm Still Learning

I love to create! I especially love to paint. The rest of the stuff that goes along with being a working artist these days Is hard! Creating a constant flow of content is exhausting! The possibilities that exist now on ways for an artist to show and share their process are vast!  You know Tik-Tok, or as my husband and I like to call it "The Tikety-Tok", isn't just for teenage girls anymore. It has quickly become yet another social media avenue that makes it  possible for artists to market and self -promote.

I would say a majority of my work evolves slowly over time. My process is an initial layer of color and mark making, then another layer, and then stepping back to see how they play off each other. Then paint and repeat over and over until the realization......Fuck......I forgot to record any of it.  My apologies, I feel like I should have some kind of disclaimer. You know like those t-shirts that say " I love Jesus, but I cuss a little." that's me. Anyway, I digress.

The painting is done, and the opportunity to document the painting is out the window. So let's pretend. Let me take you on the journey of my latest piece that I have titled "I'm  Learning". I’ll set the scene. I paint in my small studio in my home, but I also go to an art class every Friday morning at a local Art School. I've been taking classes there for about 5 years now. I love it! It is uninterrupted time for me to focus. A time for me to surround myself with other creative, talented people. I love the smell. It reminds me of the Art Building at KU. So I load my car every week with all my shit....I mean stuff and spend my Friday painting, experimenting, and implementing lessons and techniques that I have learned through past successes and failures until Voilá.

So here is what I've learned so far, when it comes to the making of art and content as well as life: In this day and age, the journey is as important as the destination. I know now that I need to just let go of what ever insecurity is holding me back, get over myself & press record. I have learned that the failures along they way are what ultimately what makes the painting and the person unique.

"Trust the timing of life. Embrace uncertainty. Dream big, but know that it's okay to fail. The major value in life is what we become. Enjoy the journey, and the beauty of becoming. When you're happy within yourself, life becomes abundant." - #happinessplanner
